From Crest High Classmates to Local Business Owners:
Celebrating Jimmy Newton and Newton's Karate

If you've lived around Shelby for very long, chances are you've heard the name Newton's Karate.

For me, though, the story is a little more personal.

Jimmy Newton and I graduated together from Crest High School's Class of 1996. Like many classmates, life eventually took us down different career paths. I went into web development and digital marketing with Shelby Web Company, while Jimmy dedicated himself to something that has positively impacted hundreds of families throughout Cleveland County: teaching traditional karate.

Today, Newton's Karate has become one of Shelby's most respected martial arts schools, helping children and adults develop confidence, discipline, respect, and practical self-defense skills every single day.

Continuing a Local Legacy

Many longtime Shelby residents remember Sensei Willie McIntosh and the tremendous influence he had on martial arts in our community.

Jimmy began training under Sensei McIntosh in 1994 and eventually carried that legacy forward by opening Newton's Karate in 2006. Rather than simply teaching martial arts, Jimmy has remained committed to preserving the traditions of authentic Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate while creating an environment where students can grow both physically and mentally.

That commitment to tradition and excellence is one of the reasons Newton's Karate has become such a respected name throughout the region.

One thing that stands out about Newton's Karate is that the lessons go far beyond martial arts techniques.

Jimmy has dedicated decades to mastering his craft.

Today he serves as Head Instructor at Newton's Karate and has earned advanced black belt rankings in both Shorin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo. Under his leadership, the school has produced numerous state, regional, and national competitors while also earning recognition as one of the AAU's Top 20 karate clubs in the country.

While awards are certainly impressive, it's the impact on students and families that matters most.

Every class represents another opportunity to help someone become more confident, more disciplined, and more prepared for life's challenges.

A New Chapter for Newton's Karate

After years of serving the community, Newton's Karate recently moved into a beautiful new facility on South DeKalb Street in Shelby. The expanded space allows Jimmy and his instructors to continue growing while providing an even better experience for current and future students. It represents another exciting milestone for a business that has steadily served Cleveland County for nearly two decades.
